I have completed my own worked solutions to the 2023 HSC Mathematics Standard 2 exam.
Thoughts on this year’s exam (link to the solutions is at the bottom of the post):
Overall, I felt this test was on the difficult side for a Standard 2 exam. Most of the questions were “tricky” versions on the underlying concepts, such as income tax, but from a “different country” and having to find the cents per dollar by working backwards, or direct variation, but with the square of x, or finding H in the BAC formula and then using that to find the time the person started drinking.
There were a few nice questions at the beginning of Section II, but by about Question 21 was where many students found it was not smooth sailing anymore.
My personal favourite question, from a question writing and creative thinking perspective, was Question 34, which was the bivariate data question on temperature and gas use. Although not straight-forward, I thought this was a good higher-band question, and I liked how you had to realise how to find the means and use that to plot a point, as well as how to use the given information to plot a y-intercept.
My personal least favourite question was probably Question 36, which was the blood alcohol content question. I already think BAC is a silly topic and a bit shoe-horned into the syllabus. The question would be quite difficult for a Standard 2 student, and they would need to be highly confident with formulas and equations to have a chance at solving this one. It would also be easy to forget to subtract the time found from the given time that the person stopped drinking.
