I have completed my worked solutions to the 2024 HSC Mathematics Extension 2 exam and will complete the video walkthrough soon.
Thoughts on this year’s exam (link to the solutions is at the bottom of the post):
I felt that the test covered the Extension 2 content well and found the questions quite approachable if you know the content. Of course, there’s always a few tricky questions, especially near the end!
Question 16 (c) was once again famously difficult, even with an article about it in the Sydney Morning Herald. In order to start it, you have to know to start both the particles’ acceleration with the same formula, perhaps not something students are used to doing with a single upward or downward trajectory. From there, the approach is typical for a vertical resisted motion problem, except the working out is complex and care must be taken to make no mistakes.
My favourite question was probably 16(a), as I found it to be a novel question and had fun trying to approach it and work it out. I messed up a little at first with the direction of the inequality but was able to fix that up when I reconsidered it.
Honourable mentions: I also enjoyed question 10 because I just tend to like the mulitple choice questions that really make you think, question 14(b) as a more unique induction proof, and 15(d) as I’m a sucker for integration questions.
My personal least favourite question was Question 14(e), because once again I usually find vector geometry proofs stressful. I got stuck for a bit on this one at part (iii), because I got to the point where I couldn’t see the obvious anymore. I find taking a break sometimes on these kinds of questions can be helpful!
Dishonourable mentions: I didn’t like Question 8 as it made me feel uneasy; the answer seemed too easy/obvious so it felt like I missed something.
