UPDATE: If you’re looking for the solutions to the latest Extension 1 exam, check here.
First off, to the students coming here just after the 2017 Mathematics Extension 1 test, congrats on finishing 12 years of mathematics studies! And to my students that I’ve personally tutored, I’m very proud of all the hard work you’ve put in!
The folks grading the HSC papers generally take a few months to publish the solutions, but I know everyone’s dying to know if they got certain questions correct or not. So I’ve worked through all of the problems from the 2017 exam for you! I tried to include as much working out as possible, in case you were wondering how to get the answers (and for future students using it to study for their exams).
I found the 2017 exam was neither particularly easy or hard this year. For the most part, if you know your concepts and formulas you could get through the test pretty well. I feel that although not a difficult question, Question 12c may have stumped students on how to use the given ratio of the volumes. I also thought 13c may have been harder than Question 14 in regards to getting the inequalities, as Question 14 was really just applying knowledge of processes we should know how to do. Although, 14c was definitely on the difficult side in regards to needing to know to integrate both sides, and tricky logarithm and exponential work.
